Why music for kids?

Most kids music is not that great. In fact, a lot of it is pretty bad. As we mention in our “The Big Idea” section of our site, we think it’s because people think that kids won’t know the difference. And maybe they won’t - at first.
If you aren’t sure yet, GGMF is philosophically opposed to this sort of approach with kids. To a large extent, kids will make do with what they are given, and it is true that they may not have the attention span for or understand ALL the intricacies of great music (or great anything), but one of the most significant characteristics of kids is that they learn quickly. We understand a few things about how they learn, but (just ask a teacher), there is a lot we don’t understand about how they learn. One thing of which you can be pretty certain is that kids won’t learn much about being a better person by listening to a song about flowers and rainbows, unless the flower makes mistakes and learns from them, and the rainbow learns about appropriate communication (or something).
GGMF believes in giving kids something they can really use. Lessons within songs, or songs within lessons - however you see it. We want to give kids things that they can really think about; music is just how we reach them. But music is powerful, especially for the typical shorter attention span these days. Music has, at its best, always been about communicating something that we can identify together. We want you to be able to put music on and know that it is delivering time-tested messages that help tie us all together rather than encourage us to get lost in our own separate worlds.
